When Twitter Doesn't Cut It

My Best Shots of 2009 (According to Flickr)

Flickr's "Interestingness" is about as flawed as it comes, but it's cold and emotionless and doesn't change day-to-day like my own opinion. For this reason I have chosen it to pick my best Flickr uploads of 2009.
I've used Slide.com to make the slideshow. It's great because it allows you to click through to the displayed photographs on Flickr.  I'm hoping it doesn't auto-play, but if it does I'm sorry.
See the show after the jump.

Social Network Domination

The problem with a new social network like Buzz, or a dying network like FriendFeed, is the lack of active users combined with the high interest from a-listers. It means the big names overly dominate, and the smart posts by everybody else are ignored because they never gain any traction.

This is not the fault, and even less, responsibility, of Scoble, Louis or Jason. The network's developers need to recognise this stage in the site's life cycle and program/filter accordingly. If they don't they will lose the interest from the majority of users, and as a result the a-listers will move on too because of a dwindling audience.

Update 15th February 2010: Louis Gray speaks about the issue here.

Foursquare vs. Gowalla

I have spent some time over the past month playing with location check-in games Foursquare and Gowalla. They are pretty similar, but have some vital differences that make choosing pretty easy.

The first comparison is the interface. Foursquare doesn't do well here. While not ugly as such, the UI gives the impression is has been designed by an engineer. It's perfectly navigable, but isn't pleasing on the eye. Gowalla on the other hand looks very pretty. Both are fast and intuitive enough, but I would much rather be looking at Gowalla each day.

Gowalla also wins on creating check-in points. It's very easy to do on both, but when your GPS signal info isn't quite up to scratch, Gowalla makes it very easy to update in their web interface. When you add further details to Foursquare check-in points, it can make them vastly more inaccurate. The only way to sort this is to contact Foursquare themselves to make the change. Very Web 1.0! My only minor gripe with Gowalla is that their categorisation system doesn't seem to have enough options.

As for the game itself, Foursquare seems very competitive. It's about making your way up a league table agains your friends, while Gowalla is about collecting and sharing. It's a matter of personal taste, but I much prefer the later.

With Gowalla winning on all three of these tests you would think it would make my decision for me. unfortunately for Gowalla there is one more test. How many of my friends are on it. Foursquare wins hands down on this test and until that changes, I'll have to put up with the shortcomings of an otherwise inferior experience.

Winner: Foursquare

Winter Gardens picnic

It's never quite as warm as you hope this time of year, but it's dry, and much more fun than sitting in the house getting in each other's way.

Tidying Up My Web Presence

I decided at 5am today that I was going to clean up my web presence and instead of spreading myself across a series of domains, I would lump them all in to one using sub-domains.

As usual, once the decision was made, I couldn't wait around or it would have driven me a little bit mental.

I have moved my photo blog to photo.notnixon.com. I decided to go with the Tumblr platform because it has a built-in community interested in the arts. It should hopefully generate some two way traffic. Something which I have struggled to get on a self-hosted blog. The old photo blog at nixonbyname.com will stay in place for a few weeks while the slackers gradually move over. I will be starting again with the new blog. There is no option to move over posts or to preserve comments, but I think it will be worth it in the medium term.

My written blog will be at blog.notnixon.com. I'll be using Posterous for this as they have an excellent platform perfectly suited to my blogging style. My posts are pretty short form and usually 'in the moment'. It's more a Tumblelog place to put my longer Twitter posts than a place to build traffic. I don't need the community of Tumblr, but I do need greater control over post naming. It just seems right.

My is now at tumble.notnixon.com. It's just some cool stuff I find round the net, and it's the reason Tumblr was invented so why go anywhere else.

I'll have to create a new landing page at notnixon.com, and longer term, I'd like to have some sort of funky navigation between all of the sub-domains, but for right now I'm happy with the new system and building up a new audience.

I'd appreciate if you update your shortcuts, your RSS subscriptions and your links to the new sites. I can't rebuild without your help.
