Tidying Up My Web Presence

I decided at 5am today that I was going to clean up my web presence and instead of spreading myself across a series of domains, I would lump them all in to one using sub-domains.

As usual, once the decision was made, I couldn't wait around or it would have driven me a little bit mental.

I have moved my photo blog to photo.notnixon.com. I decided to go with the Tumblr platform because it has a built-in community interested in the arts. It should hopefully generate some two way traffic. Something which I have struggled to get on a self-hosted blog. The old photo blog at nixonbyname.com will stay in place for a few weeks while the slackers gradually move over. I will be starting again with the new blog. There is no option to move over posts or to preserve comments, but I think it will be worth it in the medium term.

My written blog will be at blog.notnixon.com. I'll be using Posterous for this as they have an excellent platform perfectly suited to my blogging style. My posts are pretty short form and usually 'in the moment'. It's more a Tumblelog place to put my longer Twitter posts than a place to build traffic. I don't need the community of Tumblr, but I do need greater control over post naming. It just seems right.

My is now at tumble.notnixon.com. It's just some cool stuff I find round the net, and it's the reason Tumblr was invented so why go anywhere else.

I'll have to create a new landing page at notnixon.com, and longer term, I'd like to have some sort of funky navigation between all of the sub-domains, but for right now I'm happy with the new system and building up a new audience.

I'd appreciate if you update your shortcuts, your RSS subscriptions and your links to the new sites. I can't rebuild without your help.

Relaunching Nixonbyname

I've been spending my evenings this week putting together a redesign of nixonbyname.com as a full-on photoblog.

For a long time I used it as my blog and photoblog all in one, but I think that means you need to make too many compromises on both sides. Now I can concentrate on making the photographs look good, and do what writing takes my fancy here at nixon.me.

I've used the Autofocus Wordpress theme which I think does a great job...and it's free too.

Of course it's still in developments, and I'm ironing out some wee issues, so bear with me.

Wordpress Woes

Earlier today I received an IM from my good friend Raoul Pop. We work together, along with Phill Price on Photografr.com, a site which highlights the very best photography from photo sharing sites.

He had been trying to put up a new post, and had run into trouble when for some reason it forwarded him to his own site. Very strange behaviour, especially as this is a Wordpress.com hosted site, unlike NixonbyName which is prone to errors due to my excessive tinkering.

It turns out that the fee (or points for some daft reason) that I pay Wordpress every year to allow me to use my own domain on my site had expired over a week ago. No warning, no friendly email, NOTHING.

If we didn't post fairly regularly, it may have been weeks before I found out my blog wasn't working.

It serves my right. I should have moved my blog from Wordpress.com before now, but I'm balls deep in a blog that's been going for a long time. I SHOULD move to self-hosted, but as I've said before, I'm a tinkerer, and I'm liable to break it. I think Photografr would suit Tumblr quite nicely, but it's not easy making that move. Posterous doesn't have enough customisation, so that's out, and I'd NEVER move to Google's Blogger.

Anyway...thanks for nothing Wordpress...and any ideas on alternatives from the rest of you?

Chris Nixon's Posterous

I’m Chris Nixon, the alter ego of another person who isn’t online. We’re pretty much exactly the same. We look alike, we have the same accent. He’s more a “doing” person, while I just tend to talk about it.
